See how to get started with your studies!

Savonia Start 2016 at Opistotie Campus

Don't miss SavoniaStart 2017 on 5th September! I'ts an annual get-together event and start of the academic year where we welcome new students to Savonia! The day holds a lot of activities, important information about studying at Savonia, inspiring speakers, live music, and fun festivities.

Confirm the Offered Study Place

You will receive an email notifying you of the admission result in the beginning of July. You will receive the results for all the programmes that you have applied for. You can only accept one study place per term, please see more information on One study place per term provision

Confirm the offered place electronically through the link in your email notification or send the confirmation form to Savonia UAS Admission Services. If you have a Finnish ID number and online banking credentials, mobile certificate or an electronic ID card you can also accept the study place by logging in to My Studyinfo -service at www.studyinfo.fi. The offered study place must be confirmed by 14.7.2017 at 3:00 pm Finnish time at the latest.

You cannot remain on a waiting list for Savonia’s degree programmes. If you want to know more about being on a waiting list, please check from Studyinfo-website for more information.

Register as Present or Absent

As a new student you need to enrol as present or absent when you accept the offered study place. You can enrol at studyinfo.fi or by sending a confirmation form to Savonia UAS. Enrolment is binding.

There are certain limitations regarding enrolling as absent. As a new student starting studies, you are entitled to enrol as absent for the first study year only if you are

  • doing military or non-military service or women’s voluntary military service
  • on maternity, paternity or parental leave
  • incapable of starting your studies because of your illness or disability

These reasons will not shorten the time of your study right. You have to submit the proof of the reason to Savonia UAS Admission Services for enrolling as absent.

If you are enrolled as absent during your first study year because of military or non-military service or women’s voluntary military service, or due to maternity, paternity or parental leave, you are entitled to enrol as absent for another academic year (two semesters) for any reason. This time of absence does not shorten the time of your study right. However, if the reason for absence during your first study year is illness or disability, you are not entitled to another period of absence; if you do not start your studies at the beginning of the following semester, the semester/semesters that you do not spend on studies will shorten your study right time.

If you are enrolled as present for your first study year, you are entitled later to enrol as absent for one academic year (two semesters) for any reason. This period of absence does not shorten the time of your study right. In addition, if you need to be absent because of military or non-military service, women’s voluntary military service, or due to maternity, paternity or parental leave, the time of absence does not shorten your study right time either.

When being absent, you are not entitled to complete studies or gain credits. Furthermore, you are not eligible for students’ financial aid (paid to Finnish citizens or permanent residents in Finland), meal subsidy or other student benefits (e.g. travel discounts). If you enrol as absent, please remember to cancel your financial aid if you receive it from Kela, the Social Insurance Institution of Finland.

When being absent, you must enrol for the next academic year on schedule. When you continue your studies after being absent, you need update your individual study and career plan and check if any changes have taken place in the curriculum of your degree programme.

Prepare for Certification Check

The admission is conditional until Savonia UAS has verified all relevant certificates related to your application. If you fail to submit necessary documents by the set date you will lose your study place in Savonia UAS. All fees paid up until that point (tuition fees, registration fees, student union membership etc.) are non-refundable in case of intentional malpractice or giving false information.

IT Services

The Savonia network is part of the Finnish universities network called Funet. The Windows domain name of Savonia is savonia-amk, and students can login to this information network from any workstation in the campus network.

Logging in requires a personal campus username and password, which you get when you start your studies.

Personal IT Equipment

The Use of Your Own Computer in the Studies

Studying at Savonia UAS is independent of time or place and e-materials, e-services and e-learning environments are widely used. When you start your studies at Savonia UAS you should have a laptop of your own. It ensures flexibility when studying.

If you already have a laptop, you can get started with your studies. Any fairly new computer is good to start with. In addition, mobile devices such as a smartphone and a tablet are useful in your studies. The applicability and possible updating needs of your computer will be checked during the first study weeks.

BYOD, that is bring your own device, means that you use your own computer during the studies both at the Savonia UAS campuses and outside the campus areas.

If you are planning to buy a laptop before your studies start, please note the following:

  • buy a device which is good to use and has a good keyboard
  • the screen-width should be at least 14”, rather 15”, (Full HD or better)
  • it is recommended that the laptop is equipped with an 8Gt main memory and at least core i5 processor and an SSD drive
  • the battery should last several hours without charging
  • the device has good warranty coverage

The computer can have any operating system but the most commendable one is Windows 10 (not Win RT). Windows7 is also good for studies. The laptop should also have WLAN, a webcam and a headset. When you study at home, you must have internet access.

The required performance of the computer varies in different degree programmes. Various professional data processing tasks require more powerful special applications. Then you can use the computers of Savonia UAS. You will be told about the required student licenses concerning sectoral special applications at the beginning of your studies.

Software Benefits

At the beginning of your studies you are entitled to download and install the Office 365 Pro Plus software on your computer for free by using your student user name and password. Office 365 can also be accessed over the internet (cloud computing). This software can be used if your laptop has the features described above, including WLAN and adequate updates.

You will be able to connect to the Savonia wireless network, email and study environments after having received your student user name and password.

Savonia ICT Services will not download and install any software on students’ computers. Each student is responsible for the maintenance and updating of his or her computer.
