School of Music and Dance

Savonia School of Music and Dance is part of multidisciplinary Savonia University of Applied Sciences. The school provides advanced degree-level education for teachers of music and dance.

Our operational intent is to maintain and develop the national and international cultures of music and dance, prepare versatile professionals for the needs of working life, and produce cultural services that promote societal well-being. Our student-driven working approach is based on interactive processes whose goal is to instill within students a sense of independence combined with an awareness of community responsibility. Graduating teachers obtain comprehensive pedagogical training in music or dance as well as the practical skills required for their sectors’ various job tasks. The training also provides the preparedness for lifelong learning, internationality and professional development.

Education

The curriculum’s profile is emphatically career-oriented. At the same time students are encouraged to develop their creativity and search for their own artistry. We train employable experts who have the ability to function successfully with colleagues in other artistic disciplines. We strive to respond quickly to the transformations taking place in the cultural environment and the new expectations arising as a result. Our diverse course offerings exploit the interaction among the different genres and stylistic orientations of music and dance.

Besides degree training for young people we organize many kinds of postgraduate training and supplementary education programs as well as a large number of concerts and dance performances each year.
